    Into the future...

    Into the future...
    UGTS - Underground Teleportation System
The weather hasn’t been very kind this week. We have spent so many days at home because of the heavy rains and the flash floods that Mother Nature decides to bestow upon us. Well, the rains aren’t that bad since it helps us recover from the “dry spell” that we’ve been experiencing for quite a while. Actually, I love rainy days. However, I do not appreciate it when it is the cause of the multiple postponements of classes. We’ve been struggling because of the last minute exams and requirements that are given to us by our professors, not to mention the finals week is coming very soon. Oh well, I would like to apologize for the delay in posting my weekly entries. It’s just that every time it rains the telephone connections in our place are cut off so I haven’t had the opportunity to go online and chat with my friends, read my daily dose of online fictions, and update my blog. Whew! But here I am now! I’m backkk! =)

So this week, we had our creative project # 4 or was it 5? Oh whatever. Anyway, we were tasked to build something that will represent the structures of the “future”. I belong to group 1 and we were assigned to build/design a futuristic transportation facility. Working with my group was awkward at first because we didn’t know how to act around each other since some of us don’t know each other well. But I’m glad that most of my group mates are my fellow psych majors and the other two, Benjo and Raymond, were my group mates back then on our first creative project. Actually, I’m acquainted with every one of my group mates except for one girl (and up until now, I have no idea what her name is).

We decided to make an underground transportation facility. Since we imagined that in the future, all spaces both on land and air will be pretty much occupied, it would be better to create a transportation system underground. And this transportation isn’t in anyway ordinary because it uses teleportation in order to travel. Because of that, we named it as UGTS – Underground Teleportation System. Why teleportation? It’s because we think that people in the future would be so busy working therefore they don’t have enough time for their family and for themselves. But through teleportation, they’ll be able to get home in no less than 10 seconds!

    micro cities

    Micro Cities

I never thought that a mall’s structure has something to do with the people that they accommodate. I mean whenever I go to a mall, I just go in, shop around (look around), and go out just like that. I had never stopped for a while to think of its structure’s implications.

Oh well, we discussed the difference between a mall for the masses (SM Malls) and mall for the elite (Ayala Malls). Form there, I was enlightened onto the difference of its structures depending on their consumers. I never thought that the wide aisles or a walkway that the SM malls have has something to do with the “tolerance” that they give for those people who cannot afford to purchase things form the shops. And that the small space inside Ayala Malls convey that people who go there are actually “buyers” who can afford the expensive products that the shops sell. Even the parking spaces have something to do with the status of the consumers.

We also talked about the ongoing trend among capitalists now… the idea of “micro cities”. I have somehow but not quite discussed this on my previous entry. In my previous week’s entry, I compared a mall into a city. But this “micro city” thing-y is a bit similar to my discussion last week.

Anyway, this micro city that we discussed involves the separation of the well off people from those who are less fortunate ones. Okay, so the idea is like this. The capitalists or so they say create a “micro city” by putting the essential things that a normal city has like school, malls, market place, church, buildings (offices) and residential areas into a secluded place that only affluent people can afford. This idea was borne to cater the affluent people, in this case, they do not have to go out of their “haven” and see/experience the rowdy situation of the “reality” in our country.

Honestly, I would like to live in a place such as that. I mean, who wouldn’t? You would not experience the heavy traffic and the crowded are that surrounds you whenever you are in Manila. You wouldn’t have to go to another place to buy the necessities that you need, all you have to do is to walk a few blocks from your home and voila! You can instantly get whatever it is that you need! But then, the downside on this is that you’ll be too insensitive to the need of the other people. You will be too enclosed to your own “fantasy world” to the point that you would not care about things that is going on around you. Etc.

Living in that kind of place might be very ideal. I think, when the time comes wherein I have to go on my own, I’ll choose a place where everything is accessible. But, I would still be in-touch with reality and work somewhere where I’ll be able to meet the “everyday-Filipinos” in our country. =)

    Malls

    Malls

We started to talk about “Malls” this week. And for this, we were supposed to read an essay entitled “Sa Loob at Labas ng Mall kong Sawi” by Rolando Tolentino. It was a long essay. Usually, I don’t mind reading long essays, articles, or long chapters of a book but then this one really got me occupied for quite some time. The reading assignment was, obviously, written in Filipino. And I’m not really good in understanding essays that contain “pure Filipino” words.

While reading the assigned essay for artapre, I remembered how I struggled into understanding the endless reading assignments that I had last summer for my “Sikolohiyang Pilipino” class. Those readings were also written in Filipino language so I had to read those over and over again before I finally understood the “essence” of those readings.

Anyway, I read the essay by Rolando Tolentino and apparently I had a hard time understanding its content therefore I had to read it for quite a number of times.

He basically discussed about “Kulturang Popyular” and he focused on Malls. He talked about what people usually do in malls and how these malls affect us and our economic standing, the evolution of malls (from plaza à mall), the difference between the malls of the upper class to the malls for the masses and the importance of its spaces, etc.

For me, a mall is analogous to a city because it is a place where we can do practically everything that we usually do in our everyday lives. We can do our laundry in the laundry shops, buy supplies from hardware stores, eat at restaurant booths, buy food in the grocery, purchase clothes form the various array of boutique, watch movies or play bowling for entertainment, heck… you can even work inside malls because there are call centers inside it! Probably, the only difference of a mall to a city is that malls do not have an area where people can actually build their own houses.

I don’t usually go to malls. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy shopping! It’s just that… I hate crowded areas and a mall is definitely a jam-packed place. That’s why I avoid going to malls that are fond of giving “promo contests” and “on sale items” because people will definitely hound those areas. Because of this, anyone can tell that I’m rather picky when it comes to malls. I usually go to malls where there aren’t a lot of people. I also like malls where there are a lot of open spaces and those that are in-touch with nature.

My favorite places in malls are the clothing shops (of course!) and furniture shops. I especially like those furniture shops that showcase unique style and designs. Whenever I’m inside those shops, I always imagine that I am an interior designer who is actually assigned to decorate and furnish houses. =)

    naked and nude

    Naked and nude
What we discussed this week was out of the blue. I though we would be discussing about the classical architectures like the Parthenon, Leaning tower of Pisa, etc. But the session last Monday began with several “Projective Images” like the Rorschach and numerous optical illusions. This week’s first session was focused on the way we view things. It showed that each one of us has our own “senses” in viewing things, we all have different perspectives. The ways we interpret an object/image greatly depend on our sense of self.

Last Monday’s activity was a good opening for our topic this week. This week is all about Nakedness and Nudes. Ms. Castro presented an assortment of paintings and pictures that show the classical western and eastern paintings that has “nudity” as their common theme.

We also discussed about the difference between nude and naked. Naked simply means a lack of clothing. Being naked is to be bare from head to toe, to openly show one’s body without mask. On the other hand, nude, while being naked, gives the impression that one person is clothed. His/her nakedness has turned into a mask. The flesh, the tresses, and the contours of one’s body is presented fully and seen as an object, an object of desire.

On all the paintings showed by our mentor, the Judgment of Paris is one of the paintings that captured my attention. Although this painting connotes a negative feeling for me, I’d still say that it is one of the striking paintings that I saw. It looked beautiful. However, its message, rather, its story didn’t make me feel good as a woman. Who would want to be judged by men based only on their physical appearance? Oh, maybe other women would but I certainly would not condone it. The painting only shows that most (most but not all) men are very superficial.

Anyway, the intention of the painters who follows the western tradition of nudes doesn’t appeal to me at all. They imply that women are mere objects to be fantasized and be desired to. They think lowly of women and the women’s capabilities. To them, women are objects and thus can only be useful to pleasure them. Even the way people view women that time are degrading. Everything that a woman does is a reflection of her persona. Unlike men, they can easily attribute their actions to their mood and not to their personality. No wonder most women nowadays feel so insecure and apprehensive.

In the Eastern Tradition nudes, I particularly like the picture of Vishnu and Lakshmi that was presented in class. However, the image of Lakshmi as “flirtatious” irked me somehow because I don’t like overly flirtatious women. But still, the thought that the eastern paintings portray love and equality made me look optimistic compared to indifferent paintings in the Western tradition.

Western tradition of nudes exudes a feeling of ownership. The women in the paintings are viewed as an object. At the same they (women) are aware of their spectators. Eastern tradition of nudes on the other hand, portrays love and equality between men and women. The paintings show active participation of both parties in expressing their sexual desire and love to one another.

On feminine wash and sanitary napkins

On feminine wash and sanitary napkins...

This week, we were tasked to do our own interpretation of “The Mona Lisa”. This should be done in groups of two or three. So, of course, I’m grouped with my ever so loyal block mates, Talitha and Carl. =) The three of us have always been group mates in every one of our classes, may it be a lecture class or a laboratory class. So I think, we would probably be group mates till’ the end – even in our thesis.

Anyway, right after Ms. Jewel told us of our creative project, we’ve been brainstorming on what we are supposed to do. We basically decided to focus on Mona Lisa’s feminine side. Therefore, we chose the products that will embody her femininity. Thus, we ended up with feminine wash and sanitary napkins. Why these products? - Well, we decided to select this product because it can relate to every woman in this world.

We named the products as “Babae”, because we wanted to cater the Filipino society. Not only that, we also want to familiarize the “common people” on the persona of Mona Lisa. Since not every Filipino, especially the poor ones, know who she is, or rather, know about the sitter in the famous painting of Leonardo da Vinci.

In this activity, we basically showed that art can be used as a business strategy. Art can serve as the “attention-grabber” for the costumers. Just like what the class did the Mona Shampoo, Colegate, and (Mona Lisa) Boxer shorts.
